When you found out that you were going to be a parent, did you feel you were prepared for parenthood? How did you prepare to become a parent? What school did you attend to acquire the best parenting skills? Do you feel you are doing a good job as a parent? It is so unfortunate to know that parenting is one of the areas in our society in which no one is required to get some sort of formal preparation. Most of us go into parenthood blindfolded with no clue as to what’s the best way, approach, or method to raise a child. Did someone take some time to give you some positive parenting tips? Most of us go into parenting following what we learned while growing up. But what if our parents did not implement the best strategies on us? What if during our childhood all we faced was neglect, abuse and lack of love? Is that what we ought to teach our own children?

As a parent you must decide what you want and don’t want for your child. Do you wish for your child to endure the same things you did when you were growing up? Or do you want to provide your little one with a nurturing environment where love, respect, patience and respect dominate everything around him? Many parents do not realize that the problems they face with their children reflect their own lack of skills, strategies and discipline methods. So what is it that you are missing when it comes to raising your little(s) one that is not working? There are several factors such as your approach, methods, attitude, and views that contribute to a child’s bad behavior. Some positive parenting tips can help you understand what you may be missing when educating your little one.

First of all, what is your approach when your child starts crying, doing a temper tantrum, biting, pushing or hitting? The approach you take can seriously determine whether he stops or continues with such bad behavior.

Next, what methods do you use to help your child change or modify his bad behavior? Do you simply get mad and punish him or do you allow him to explain what his problem is? Again, your approach will guide the outcome of your child’s behavior. Some positive parenting tips can make a difference on your approach, view, methods and attitude about raising your child.

Being a parent can bring you satisfaction and despair at the same time. When your child displays the best behavior possible it gives you a feeling of pride and joy. But when your child displays the opposite, it gives a parent a feeling of despair and failure. Any parent can accomplish a great job raising a child. All it takes is the desire to modify ones behavior, attitude and views about child rearing and of course some good positive parenting tips.

Also, what is your view about how you deal with your child’s upbringing? Do you believe that you should follow the same strategies your parents used? Or do you have your own believes and attitudes about how to raise your child? You have to remember that there is a big difference between the time when you were little and now.

What percentage of the parents actually spend some time helping their kids with homework?

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Homework Help | Posted on 20-09-2010-05-2008

I have been a volunteer tutor in 6ht grade math since retiring over five years ago. It's sad to say that even at this grade level, 80 percent do not know single digit multiplication table. Asked if their parents required them to do some studies and do homework, most replied that their parents do not care or do not have the time. We blame the teachers and we blame the system but the fact of the matter is that without the parents, these kids are going nowhere.

I am dating a guy who lives 2 hours away and my parents don't know about him. We are planning on getting married in the next year or two and I really need to tell my parents about him but I am not sure how. He is moving here in about 7 months and I am planning on moving in with him but how do I tell them that. I am so lost and confused and I want my parents to like him and give him a chance because he is really good to me.

Why do people answer PARENTING questions if they are NOT a parent?

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Parenting | Posted on 18-09-2010-05-2008

If you are a parent, or an experienced child-care provider that is one thing to share your opinion. You have something to offer. I'm just trying to get a truthful answer, not some silly comment. If you are not a parent, is your answer based on your observations? What is your purpose for answering a parenting question? Is it for research purposes?
I appreciate the honest answers given. I was simply curious-that's all. Just because I have driven a car for 17 years does not make me feel qualified to answer mechanical questions. Again, thank you to those who answered my question without being a smart-alec.

Basic Parenting Tips for Adhd – Help is at Hand

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Adhd | Posted on 13-09-2010-05-2008

The key to ADHD treatment is not ADHD medication - it is simply parenting skills and parenting tips for ADHD is a hot topic right now. Parents want to know how to control their kids, deal with screaming and kicking, temper tantrums and failure to complete homework.

All the kids you read about in the blogs who are out of control and aggressive are sometimes just reacting to their ADHD meds. Aggression is one of the behaviours associated with these psychostimulant drugs, as indeed with marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and other substances. When the parents are interviewed the ONE thing that comes out is their failure to set limits. This is very often the result of guilt or fear or indulgence on their part. Being over strict or over indulgent is going to have an enormous influence on the way your child behaves. The ability to set limits which are realistic is one of best parenting tips for ADHD that you can apply.

Here are some five more parenting tips ADHD:

1. How the family functions is KEY. Very often, the rules are unclear or applied unfairly. Sometimes, the father may apply the rules in a different way from the mother and confusion and misbehaviour are the result.

2. Time limits and setting the routine. The child knows what happens and when it happens. Routine is important to the ADHD child so there is a time limit for watching TV, computer and video games and so on. Letting children know when things are due to finish helps them in their time management skills, rather than finishing each activity brusquely.

3. Getting ready for bed has to follow a set routine as well . Proper preparation and calming down activities are a great help here. This also helps with sleep problems.

4. Make sure that you are communicating with your child and praising him or her when tasks, such as homework are finished. Help them to break jobs and chores into little pieces remembering that their attention span is rather short. This is especially helpful for homework.

5. Children and the whole family are aware of the rewards and withdrawal of benefits if jobs and tasks are not completed or done. A points or star system to win a special prize or treat which are put on post-its on the fridge door is a good idea.

I know one mother of an ADHD child who became a Taekwondo champion and that was because she refused to have him put on medication. Organising outdoor and physical activities together with your kids is very important too as it increases bonding. While parenting tips for ADHD are useful, there is still the question of what type of medication to give your child. You are probably scared to death about the side effects of the

ADHD drugs and wonder if there is a safer, natural treatment for ADHD. Parenting tips ADHD are just one part of the mosaic- the others are mentioned below and should make your life a lot easier and more serene.
