How do you stay current on the latest scientific research on parenting and child development?

I considered subscribing to _Child Development_, a scholarly journal that publishes a lot of the leading research articles on parenting and child outcomes, but it's subscription fee is horrendous. (Set for university libraries, not parents, I guess.)

Most magazines seem to give very short shrift to research. They interview so-called experts for ideas from time to time, but you can tell that these folks are rarely research scientists.

So have any of you found any good methods of doing this?

I am a teen mother writing a paper for my college English class about the contriverasial issues of teen pregnancy and parenting. I understand that people have different point of views about the situation. If you could tell me if you agree or disagree and why that would be great.

What exactly can parents do to help their daughters enter the dating world with confidence?

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Adolescent | Posted on 20-04-2010-05-2008

Girls rarely get to direct their own sexual identity or development in our culture. Between the messages they get from the media, friends, parents and boys, it's amazing any of them leave adolescence unscathed. Unfortunately, though, many don't. So what can parents do to protect their girls? How can they help girls navigate their way through these messages, and still somehow stay true to the girls' own desires? How can they still get to date, without getting too sexually involved? Thank you so much on behalf on me and my daughter!

How To Become a Great Parent? 5 Simple Parenting Tips Revealed!

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Parenting | Posted on 11-04-2010-05-2008

So you want to become a great parent?

Simplicity is the best choice for becoming a great parent. My children love to learn from me and they feel proud of what I know. I simply encourage them to do simple things that really matter and this could also gain the self-confidence of the child.

Here are 5 simple parenting tips which I love to share with you… and it is this:

1. Encourage your children to meet new friends especially in their kindergarten. It is so grateful to see how open your child is to meeting someone new. It is a great way to increase their communication skills and become sociable.

2. Teach your child that a “genuine SMILE” can get them anywhere in life.

3. A great parenting skill is to understand how the mind of the child works and integrating some of this simplistic fun in your own life. Children love to play and they know very well how to entertain themselves. Parents should try to understand their enjoyment and in addition, need to enjoy with them.

4. Try more new things in order to improve your parenting skills and let your children know that they could do the same thing as you do. Parents should allow their children to try more different activities such as basketball, pianos, dancing and etc. This is a way that children could experience what they really enjoy and what they are good at.

5. Teach your children to love learning. Children are curious in many new things and it is great to have them explore new activity into a learning pattern. Parents could bring their children to the library or museum to pick their new books or learn other educational stuffs that makes them feel fun of.

Warning : Do not neglect the above simple tips!! Be sure to take this advice seriously if your children love to learn from you and feel proud of what you know, these are the basic steps you must get through!

What parenting moves have backfired on you?

Posted by ParentHelper | Posted in Parenting | Posted on 10-04-2010-05-2008

For instance, when I was 15 I wanted to wear thongs so my panty line wouldn't show. Everyone at school would make fun of you if it showed. My parents wouldn't let me have thongs so I started not wearing any underwear to school. One day my skirt flew up and I had no underwear on and all the boys saw and the school called my mom about it. She took me to buy thongs that day. Now I am a mom and am curious about other parenting moves that could backfire.
