Questions to Ask Yourself to See if the Family is Overscheduled
There are many times when you as a family are going to have to decide if you are taking on too much. There are lots of things to worry about in this world today. Families have to worry about work and school, but then a whole array of other activities that they are going to want to focus on each and every day. Most people believe that it is a good idea for families to have lots going on, because this keeps people from being bored and getting into trouble. However, you might find that as a family you are simply taking on too much, and this could lead you to major problems. There are some things that you can think about in order to see if you are overscheduled or not, and in order to decide what you are going to do about it.
Something that people fail to realize is that while being busy is good, being too busy takes away from a lot of stuff as well. If your family is on the go each and every weekend, and every night after school, you are not leaving time for anything else and you are not leaving time to be together as a family. The other thing about activities is that often they take away from family time because the entire family is not doing them together. So, you want to be sure that your activities and your schedule is not too busy for your family.
First of all, you should ask yourself if everyone in your family is happy with what they are doing. Are your kids enjoying each of the activities that they are in, and is the family enjoying going along with these activities? If there is something that you are forcing your child to do that they aren't enjoying, you want to be sure that you can prioritize your activities. You should not be overbooked and doing things that not everyone likes to do. This is a good time to take a look at how you spend your time as a family and plan accordingly. You want to be sure that this is something that you are asking yourself.
Next, you want to see if you still have time together as a family. Do you have a couple of nights free a week where you can sit down and eat together? Remember that doing that is one of the most important things to do, so you want to be sure that you are able to do that. Even if you do not have the time to sit down to a big fancy meal, you can at least sit down for a few minutes are reconnecting with each other. This time is critical and it means a lot to you and your children. If you can't sit down as a family on any night of the week, you want to be sure that you change something. Look at the calendar and plan these nights—one or two a week—and then make sure everyone is available.
Another thing to ask is if you are able to spend the weekend together as a family. It is often nice to have a weekend just to be together a s family, and if you are constantly doing activities on your weekends, you might find that you miss your quality time together. So, ask yourself if you at least have a couple of weekends free for your family time.
When your family is overbooked, you will find that they are cranky and stressed. You need time together and as a parent, it is your job to make sure this happens. Never underestimate this time together. These are all questions that will help you figure out whether or not your family is too overbooked.
