Feeding Your Family when You Are Short on Time

Nutrition is important, but too often individuals in our society sacrifice nutrition for convenience. However, when it comes to feeding your family it is very important to keep nutrition at the forefront. When busy parents are short on time, it may be easier to just do the quickest thing. But it is important to remember that there are a number of options that are quick and easy – but that do not neglect nutrition. Consider these suggestions when you are short on time and need to feed your family something nutritious and wholesome!

1 – Plan ahead: You can keep better track of meals and your time if you plan ahead. Sometimes this can be as simple as writing out a list each week that details each nights dinners or lunches (if necessary). This will help you to know each night that you have a meal picked out, and you do not need to rummage through until you find pieces that can be sloshed together to form a makeshift meal.

2 – Find simple recipes: By keeping a list of simple recipes that take less time to prepare, you can help to allow yourself the time and ability to make meals quickly or on the go. By having these recipes on hand, you can help ensure that you do not waste time racking your brain to try to come up with a meal that will not take long to prepare and cook. Keep these recipes some place safe and close so that they can be accessed and so that there will be less of a chance of losing these important and helpful recipes!

3 – Invest in a crock pot: Crock pots are very helpful for parents who are short on time. Everything can be prepared in the morning, and it safely cooks as the day goes on. This allows parents to either spend time in the morning making dinner for later that night (if they have more time in the morning as compared to the evening), or they can simply buy frozen bags of nutritional and prepared meals that just need to be emptied into the crock pot in the morning, then left alone to cook throughout the day.

4 – Try to limit your fast food: Fast food can lead to more problems when it comes to the health and nutritional balance of your family, so even though it is convenient it should still be limited and not used as the main source of dinners during your average week. It is great as a special treat or something every once in a while, since variety in life is helpful, but it should never be used as the primary source of where you or your family get meals.

5 – Consider meal-in-a-box dinners: There are a number of companies that supply grocery stores with their meal-in-a-box goods. These are small boxes that contain a fairly nutritious and easily made meal. Some of the dinners include chicken and dumplings or pizza. The box contains virtually everything that you will need, and they often take no more than a few minutes to prepare. Then, they need to be cooked which often does not take too long either. These are great for busy parents that cannot afford to spend too much time preparing their meals.

6 – Prepare things ahead of time that just need to be re-heated: There are many meals that can be cooked when busy parents have free time, then they can be frozen and reheated when they need to be used. This includes different types of stews, soups and pasta meals. Meat can also be frozen, such as meatballs, so they can simply be reheated for an easy meal of spaghetti and meatballs when necessary.
